Maize Schools Natatorium
Maize patrons will consider a separate question in the upcoming bond election concerning a $12.85 million swimming pool complex.
Estimated state aid will cover 38 percent, or $4,883,000 of the project.
Maize Schools does not have a swimming pool and must rely on a partnership with the Greater Wichita YMCA for pool use. Though it is a strong relationship, the school district does not have full flexibility when it comes to scheduling practices and events. Our high school swim programs are separate but currently must practice together.
Our physical education curriculum does not include swimming. We teach our students sports and wellness but not the life-saving skill of swimming. Special education and early childhood programs will benefit from a pool.
A 9-lane 50-meter/18-lane 25-yard pool will allow Maize Schools to host its own winning high school swimming teams, incorporate swimming into curriculum to teach all students how to swim and provide a destination location for large-scale school and club swim competitions, community events and open swim use for residents.
The plan would feature a zero-entry ramp into the pool (illustrated at left), ideal for use by early childhood programs and students and community members with disabilities.
The facility will include elevated spectator seating for 750 (illustrated below), lobby/concession space and locker rooms. It will benefit the local economy and provide further partnership opportunities with local recreation organizations.
