Fifth Grade
To develop children socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically so they will
become responsible and contributing citizens of the world.
MATH
Focus:
The fifth graders will use mathematical skills to be better problem solvers and
thinkers.
Basic Outcomes:
- Multiplication facts (0-12)
- Multiplying by 1-digit and 2-digit numbers
- Dividing by 1-digit and 2-digit divisors
- Ability to solve word problems using the four basic operations
- Ability to solve problems using tables and graphs
- Ability to estimate using real-life situations
- Ability to use mental math to solve problems
- Use Measurement skills: 1) one eighth, one fourth, one half, one inch. 2) millimeters and centimeters
- Demonstrate place value of hundred-millions through thousands
- Demonstrate computation of fractions

SCIENCE
Focus:
In science, fifth graders will acquire information about the living and non-living
aspects of the earth and how they work together.
Basic Outcomes:
- Use the scientific method in problem solving
- Receive, interpret, and communicate meaning from information
- Identify the parts and interactions of pendulum, electrical, lever and pulley systems, and environments
- Recognize the interactions of matter and the flow of energy
- Describe cycle changes in the natural world
- Show understanding of conservation and equilibrium of matter using diagrams, demonstrations, or models

COMMUNICATIONS
Focus:
The fifth graders will use communications to foster development in their oral and
written language skills.
Basic Outcomes:
- Spelling: The student will apply weekly lesson rules to lists of words and use them in other curriculum areas.
- English: Expand his/her knowledge of the parts of speech capitalization and punctuation skills; identify the subject/predicate in sentences.
- Reading: exposure of a variety of literature, the student will develop a meaningful vocabulary which will enable comprehension; develop reading skills in summarizing, context clues, following directions, main idea, drawing conclusions, predicting outcomes, noting important details, sequencing
- Reading comprehension
- Use the 6-trait model to produce a final product using available technology
SOCIAL STUDIES
Focus:
The fifth graders will develop an understanding of U.S. history and geography and their
significance to modern society.
Basic Outcomes:
- Civics/Government: The student will understand governmental systems of the United States with an emphasis on the U.S. Constitution, the necessity for the rule of the law, the civic values of the American democracy, and the rights, privileges, and responsibilities in becoming active participants in the democratic process.
- Geography: The student will understand the spatial organization and relationships among people, places, physical and cultural environments, and the effects of these interactions in an interconnected world.
- Kansas History: The student will gain a working knowledge of significant individuals, groups, ideas, events, eras, and developments in the history of Kansas.
- United States History: The student will develop a working knowledge of significant individuals, groups, ideas, events, eras, and developments in the history of the United States, utilizing essential analytical and research skills.
- Performance: The students can use essential analytical and research skills.
FINE/PRACTICAL ARTS
The fine/practical arts (physical education/health, music, art, technology) area will
give students exposure to programs which focus on developing practical lifetime skills.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Focus:
The purpose of elementary physical education is to develop and maintain the
knowledge, skills, and concepts inherent to the total development of a child, physically,
psychologically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually, which will increase levels of
enjoyment for self confidence and successful living.
Basic Outcomes:
- Demonstrate mature forms for all basic manipulatives, locomotor, non-locomotor and increased competency in more advanced specialized skills
- Apply movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills (learning concepts)
- Understand the cause and effect associated with participation in physical education (lifetime benefits)
- Demonstrate the knowledge to monitor and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness (is physically fit)
- Demonstrate the social and personal responsibility associated with participation in physical activity (personal and social skills)
HEALTH
Focus:
Life is a series of choices with consequences.
Basic Outcomes:

MUSIC
Focus:
To develop all students' musical skills and understanding, by providing quality
and sequential music education K-12, enabling them to value music throughout life.
Vocal Focus:
To introduce and expand upon basic music concepts through a variety of
musical experiences in a secure environment. All students will have the opportunity to
participate in a public performance.
Basic Outcomes:
- Melody (i.e. Sings a variety of songs)
- Rhythm (i.e. Perform increasingly complex rhythmic patterns)
- Harmony (i.e. Sings rounds and two part songs)
- Form (i.e. Understands musical forms such as 2 pt. (AB), 3 pt. (ABA) rondo )
- Timbre (Tone Color) (i.e. Listen to and identify specific instruments and instrument groups)

INSTRUMENTAL
Focus:
Fifth grade band introduces students to the practice and performance of band
instruments. Expanding on basic music elements and concepts, this class will provide the
skills and knowledge students need to perform their specific instrument in a group or solo
situation.
ART
Focus:
The fifth grader will gain an appreciation of the arts and participate in
activities that enhance his/her artistic abilities.
Basic Outcomes:
- Combine the elements and principles of art to make creative and 2-dimensional products which have purpose and aesthetic appeal
- Be able to select and use appropriate media, techniques, and process to express ideas, feelings and experiences
- Be able to demonstrate safe use, control and maintenance of tools and media
- Be able to analyze and evaluate their original art using the elements and principles of art
- Possess an introductory understanding of visual structures, style, and technique in art
- Become familiar with art-based career choices
- Design graphics through technology
TECHNOLOGY
Focus:
Students will have the ability to access and utilize technology skills as tools
to foster critical thinking in all subjects in all grades K-12.
Basic Outcomes:
- Recognizing the process of a computer and how it works
- Describe how computers affect our lives
- Understanding the moral and legal issues involved with computers introducing the district's acceptable use policy for appropriate use of the Internet
- Developing keyboarding skills
- Demonstrating uses of the computer as a communication tool
SUPPORT SERVICES
The support staff/programs incorporate more dimensions and options to student life in
order to better serve and assist the student.
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
Focus:
The focus of the library media center is to create an appreciation of literature
and to prepare students to access, utilize, analyze and develop information within the
curriculum disciplines.
Basic Outcomes:
- Know library procedures and appropriate behavior
- Be able to locate and use general subject information resources
- Be able to acquire, analyze and utilize information
- Be able to organize and record information
- Be able to produce, create and communicate information effectively
- Recognize literature as an essential base of cultural and practical knowledge
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Focus:
The aim of the Maize Special Education Program is to meet individual needs of
students and to foster confident, independent, successful, life long learners.
Basic Outcomes:
to develop and implement developmentally appropriate individual
education plans for identified students in the following areas:
1. Social and Behavior Skills:

- Appropriate behaviors with authority figures
- Appropriate behaviors in community and social situations

USD 266 is a member of the Sedgwick County Area Educational Services Interlocal
Cooperative. Member schools are: Burrton, Cheney, Clearwater, Conway Springs, Goddard,
Maize, Renwick, Sedgwick, and Valley Center. The cooperative employs personnel to educate
children in the areas of: speech, learning disability, educable mentally handicapped,
severely multiple handicapped, trainable mentally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually
impaired, personal and social adjustment, behavioral disordered, physically impaired, as
well as school psychologists to make proper evaluation of students. In the areas of gifted
education, personnel are employed by each individual district. In addition there is a
workstudy program, social workers, and instructional materials center, and preschool
available for children 3 to school age. Other services available to students are
contracted through educational services and paid for by the cooperative. Students with
special needs in grades K-12 in Maize Schools have access to all of the above services.
COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
Focus:
Maize USD 266 counselors strive to help students with their personal, social,
educational and vocational needs in order to assist them in becoming more productive,
responsible citizens in an ever changing world. The elementary counselors
serve the students' personal, social, educational and vocational needs through individual,
group and classroom guidance.
Basic Outcomes:
- Demonstrate problem solving skills
- Improve communication skills
- Demonstrate anger management
- Display refusal skills regarding alcohol/drug abuse and inappropriate touch
- Improve interpersonal relationships
SCHOOL NURSE
Focus:
A comprehensive school health program is essential for the promotion,
protection, maintenance, and improvement of the health of the school population. The
purpose of school nursing is to enhance the educational process by the modification
or removal of health related barriers to learning and by promotion of an optimum
level of wellness among school aged children, youth, and school personnel. The goal
for the elementary nurse is health education for all students. This will be
accomplished throughout the school year by:
- classroom presentations to reinforce health curriculum.
- helping students learn more about their special needs or conditions when it is appropriate.
- acting as a resource person for teachers and other school personnel.
TITLE I PROGRAM
Focus:
Teachers will strive to build confidence and foster a positive attitude toward
learning, while moving individuals from where they are performing academically to their
current grade level.
Basic Outcomes:
- 55% of the students will achieve a positive Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE) score
- Title I teachers will provide positive support to classroom teachers in remediating students
- To foster a postive outlook toward reading, literature, and written language
- To foster a positive outlook toward problem solving, computation, and math concepts
