Second Grade
Our purpose is to provide second graders the opportunity to reach their maximum
potential.
MATH
Focus:
To provide all second grade students with basic problem solving and critical
thinking skills by using classroom instruction and technology.
Basic Outcomes:
- Add and Subtract facts 0-18
- Practice place value for ones, tens and hundreds
- Understand the concept of greater than and less than
- Identify value of coins
- Identify inch, foot, centimeter and meter
- Identify 1/4, 1/2 and whole
- Identify time to the hour and 1/2 hour
- Be introduced to regrouping, graphs and charts, problem solving and estimating
- Identify basic geometric shapes
SCIENCE
Focus:
Students will exhibit awareness of changes that occur in the natural world.
Basic Outcomes:
- Exhibit knowledge of environment
- Be introduced to life cycles and organisms, weather and space
- Learn about magnets, simple machines (push and pull)
- Use problem solving
COMMUNICATIONS
Focus:
Communication is to assure that all students express themselves in oral and written
language.
Basic Outcomes:
- Comprehend oral material
- Comprehend written material
- Use word attack skills using vowel sounds, phonic analysis consonants, phonic
analysis vowels, high frequency word match
- Write sentences
- Apply spelling strategies to written work and dictation
- Print legibly
SOCIAL STUDIES
Focus:
All students will be given the opportunity to become responsible, productive
citizens by providing them with experiences which create an understanding of the cultures
and customs in a changing world.
Basic Outcomes:
- Be aware of current issues
- Be introduced to the characteristics of early America
- Be introduced to Kansas history
- Be introduced to maps, globes, charts, timelines, graphs, occupations and communities
FINE/PRACTICAL ARTS
The fine/practical arts (physical education/health, music, technology, art) area will
give students exposure to programs which focus on developing practical lifetime skills.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Focus:
The purpose of elementary physical education is to develop and maintain the
knowledge, skills and concepts inherent to the total development of a child, physically,
psychologically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually, which will increase levels of
enjoyment for self confidence and successful living.
Basic Outcomes:
Participation in a quality physical education program which
results in students being able to develop skills so they are able to:
- demonstrate competency in a variety of basic and advanced movement forms (motor skills).
- apply movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills
(learning concepts).
- understand the cause and effect associated with participation in physical education
(lifetime benefits).
- demonstrate the knowledge to monitor and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical
fitness (is physically fit).
- demonstrate the social and personal responsibility associated with participation in
physical activity (personal and social skills).
MUSIC
Focus:
To develop all students' musical skills and understanding, by providing quality
and sequential music education K-12, enabling them to value music throughout life.
Vocal Focus:
To introduce and expand upon basic music concepts through a variety of
musical experiences in a secure environment. All students will have the opportunity to
participate in a public performance.
Basic Outcomes:
- Melody (i.e. Sing Ostinato)
- Rhythm (i.e. Recognize and write rhythm patterns using quarter notes and half notes)
- Harmony (i.e. Recognize song with accompaniment or without accompaniment)
- Form (i.e. Identify melodic phrases as being same/different/same) (ABA)
- Timbre (Tone Color) (i.e. Identify string family)
- Expression/ Creativity (i.e. Create a movement showing a 3 beat pattern)
- Style/Culture (i.e. Exposed to music theatre)
- Tonal Production (i.e. Sing on pitch)
TECHNOLOGY
Focus:
Students will have the ability to access and utilize technology skills as tools
to foster critical thinking in all subjects in all grades K-12.
Basic Outcomes:
- Can identify computer parts: keyboard, mouse, printer, and monitor
- Can participate in a group activity using computer activities that are integrated into
the classroom curriculum
- Are beginning to understand proper keyboarding techniques
- Can use enter, shift, space bar, escape, arrows, backspace, caps lock, and delete
- Create a project integrated within the classroom curriculum
ART
Focus:
The focus in art is for students to feel successful through individual creativity.
Basic Outcomes:
- Be able to recognize primary and secondary colors
- Exhibit awareness of different medias and techniques
- Be able to recognize placement of horizon line and perspective
- Be familiar with computer software that allows students to create art
- Demonstrate use of realistic approach to drawing figures and things in proper
proportion
HEALTH
Focus:
The focus in health is for students to demonstrate awareness of the importance
of nutrition, hygiene, exercise and safety.
Basic Outcomes:
- Understand the importance of exercise, nutrition and proper hygiene
- Exhibit an awareness of the basic functions of body parts
- Be able to identify proper safety techniques in the community, school and home
- Use technology to enhance the students' understanding of health issues
SUPPORT SERVICES
The support staff/programs incorporate more dimensions and options to student life
in order to better serve and assist the student.
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
Focus:
The focus of the library media center is to create an appreciation of
literature and to prepare students to access, utilize, analyze, and develop information
within the curriculum disciplines.
Basic Outcomes:
- Know library procedures and appropriate behavior
- Be able to locate and use general subject information resources
- Be able to acquire, analyze and utilize information
- Be able to organize and record information
- Be able to produce, create and communicate information effectively
- Recognize literature as an essential base of cultural and practical knowledge
COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
Focus:
Maize USD 266 counselors strive to help students with their personal,
social, educational, and vocational needs in order to assist them in becoming more
productive, responsible citizens in an ever changing world. The elementary counselors
serve the students' personal, social, educational and vocational needs through
individual, group and classroom guidance.
Basic Outcomes:
- Be able to demonstrate problem-solving skills
- Be able to improve communication skills
- Be able to demonstrate anger management
- Be able to display refusal skills regarding alcohol/drug abuse and inappropriate touch
- Be able to improve interpersonal relationships
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Focus:
The aim of the Maize Special Education Program is to meet individual needs of
students and to foster confident, independent, successful, life long learners.
Basic Outcomes:
To develop and implement developmentally appropriate individual
education plans for identified students in the following areas:
1. Social and Behavior Skills:
- Appropriate behaviors with peers
- Appropriate behaviors with authority figures
- Appropriate behaviors in community and social situations
- Community rules
- Sharing, self control, self esteem
- Responsibility
2. Self Help Skills:
- Independent work skills
- Independent living skills
- Survival skills
- Pre-vocational training
3. Communications:
- Articulation: speech sound development
- Voice: vocal nodules, voice abuse, etc.
- Fluency: stuttering
- Language: use of language, understanding language, processing, social use of speech
4. Academics:
- Reading: Readiness/Oral Reading/Comprehension/Reading Skills
- Written Language: Fine Motor Skills/Oral Language Development/Written Expression
- Math: Readiness/Computation/Problem Solving/Application
- General Knowledge: Humanities/Science/Health/Social Studies
USD 266 is a member of the Sedgwick County Area Educational Services Interlocal
Cooperative. Member schools are: Burrton, Cheney, Clearwater, Conway Springs, Goddard,
Maize, Renwick, Sedgwick, and Valley Center. The cooperative employs personnel to educate
children in the areas of: speech, learning disability, educable mentally handicapped,
severely multiple handicapped, trainable mentally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually
impaired, personal and social adjustment, behavioral disordered, physically impaired, as
well as school psychologists to make proper evaluation of students. In the areas of gifted
education, personnel are employed by each individual district. In addition there is a
workstudy program, social workers, and instructional materials center, and preschool
available for children 3 to school age. Other services available to students are
contracted through educational services and paid for by the cooperative. Students with
special needs in grades K-12 in Maize Schools have access to all of the above services.
SCHOOL NURSE
Focus:
A comprehensive school health program is essential for the promotion,
protection, maintenance and improvement of the health of the school population. The
purpose of school nursing is to enhance the educational process by the modification or
removal of health related barriers to learning and by promotion of an optimum level of
wellness among school aged children, youth, and school personnel. The nursing staff is
here to meet students' medical needs and to developmentally educate students about proper
lifestyle choices for health maintenance.
Basic Outcomes:
- Students using inhalers at school will demonstrate the proper technique for
administration by as measured by observation of students by nursing personnel.
- Diabetic students will be able to verbalize what numbers represent high and low
blood sugars.
- Staff members will practice universal precaution to avoid possible exposure to
blood borne pathogens as measured by observation and verbal communication of staff
personnel.
- Students receive hearing and vision checks.
TITLE I PROGRAM
Focus:
Teachers will strive to build confidence and foster a positive attitude toward
learning, while moving individuals from where they are performing academically to their
current grade level.
Basic Outcomes:
- 55% of the students will achieve a positive Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE) score
- Title I teachers will provide positive support to classroom teachers in remediating
students
- To foster a positive outlook towards reading, literature and written language
- To foster a positive outlook towards problem solving, computation and math concepts
