Third Grade
The focus for third grade is to continue the development of responsible, cooperative
citizens who will demonstrate competence in the skills of academics, effective
communication, problem solving and technology.
MATH
Focus:
The focus of math in third grade is to provide the students with the mathematical
ability to use information to reason, to think creatively, and to formulate, solve and
reflect critically on problem situations within and outside of mathematics.
Basic Outcomes:
- Addition and subtraction (0-18)
- Multiplication facts (0-5)
- Regrouping of addition and subtraction (4 digit numbers)
- Place value through thousands
- Estimating to tens and hundreds
- Telling time to the minute
- Money - count money and correctly use decimal points and dollar signs
- Interpret graphs
- Geometry - symmetry, congruency, recognize solids and shapes
- Measurement - linear, volume, temperature and mass
- Calculator basic functions
- Communicate using mathematical terms
- Creative problem solving with one-step problems
- Fractions - reading and comparing parts
- Math performance
SCIENCE
Focus:
The focus of science in third grade is to enable the student to acquire and refine the
skills of predicting, observing, collecting data and classifying through inquiry,
discovery and the use of computers.
Basic Outcomes:
- Magnets - properties of repel and attract
- Electricity - simple circuits
- Solar system - order of the planets - compare/contrast planets
- Plants - main parts of the plants and function of
- Animals - habitat, five classifications -mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and
reptiles
- Measurement - utilization within the scientific process
- Simple machines
- Earth science - land, air, water
COMMUNICATIONS
Focus:
The focus of communication in third grade is to develop listening, speaking, reading
and writing skills through print, non-print and technological methods.
Basic Outcomes:
- Follow oral and written communications
- Spoken and written communication is effectively conveyed to others
- Writing performance by responding on a given topic
- Memorize spelling words and apply them in print
- Recognize and apply vocabulary
- Comprehend written material
- Access and utilize information from media centers
- Introduce and review parts of speech
SOCIAL STUDIES
Focus:
The focus of social sciences in third grade is to understand the concept of
communities.
Basic Outcomes:
- Community needs shelter, commerce, and telecommunications
- Cultural diversity
- Civic responsibilities
- Community Structure rural, urban, suburban
- Geography: map and globe skills, landforms and natural resources
- Kansas History
FINE/PRACTICAL ARTS
The fine/practical arts (physical education/health, music, art, technology) area will
give students exposure to programs which focus on developing practical lifetime skills.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Focus:
The purpose of elementary physical education is to develop and maintain the
knowledge, skills and concepts inherent to the total development of a child, physically,
psychologically, socially, emotionally and intellectually, which will increase levels of
enjoyment for self confidence and successful living.
Basic Outcomes:
Participation in a quality physical education program would
result in students being able to develop skills so they are able to:
- demonstrate competency in a variety of basic and advanced movement forms (motor skills).
- apply movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills (learning concepts).
- understand the cause and effect associated with participation in physical education (lifetime benefits).
- demonstrate the knowledge to monitor and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness (is physically fit).
- demonstrate the social and personal responsibility associated with participation in physical activity (personal and social skills).
HEALTH
Focus:
The focus in health is for students to demonstrate awareness of the importance of
nutrition, hygiene, exercise and safety.

MUSIC
Focus:
To develop all students' musical skills and understanding, by providing quality
and sequential music education K-12, enabling them to value music throughout life.
Vocal Focus:
To introduce and expand upon basic music concepts through a variety of
musical experiences in a secure environment. All students will have the opportunity to
participate in a public performance.
Basic Outcomes:
- Melody (i.e. Identify steps, skips, stay the same)
- Rhythm (i.e. Identify music moving in 2's and 3's)
- Harmony (i.e. Sing rounds)
- Form (i.e. Identify 3-part songs)
- Timbre (Tone Color) (i.e. Classify instruments into groups of strings woodwinds, brass, and percussion)
- Expression/ Creativity (i.e. Sing a variety of styles of music.)
- Style/Culture (i.e. Exposed to music theatre)
- Tonal Production (i.e. Sing on pitch with a pleasing tone)
ART
Focus:
The focus in art is the appreciation and expression of self and others to
enhance the quality of life.
Basic Outcomes:
- Encourage individual creativity through a variety of art media
- Be able to recognize primary and secondary colors
- Exhibit awareness of different medias and techniques
- Be able to recognize placement of horizon of line
- Introduce a variety of artists and their styles
TECHNOLOGY
Focus:
Students will have the ability to access and utilize technology skills as tools
to foster critical thinking in all subjects in all grades K-12.
Basic Outcomes:
- Recognizing the processes of a computer and how it works
- Describe how computers affect our lives
- Developing keyboarding skills
- Demonstrating general uses of the computer
- Demonstrating uses of the computer as a communication tool
SUPPORT SERVICES
The support staff/programs incorporate more dimensions and options to student life in
order to better serve and assist the student.
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
Focus:
The focus of the library media center is to create an appreciation of literature
and to prepare students to access, utilize, analyze, and develop information within the
curriculum disciplines.
Basic Outcomes:
- Know library procedures and appropriate behavior
- Be able to locate and use general subject information resources
- Be able to acquire, analyze and utilize information
- Be able to organize and record information
- Be able to produce, create and communicate information effectively
- Recognize literature as an essential base of cultural and practical knowledge
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Focus:
The aim of the Maize Special Education Program is to meet individual needs of
students and to foster confident, independent, successful, life-long learners.
Basic Outcomes:
To develop and implement developmentally appropriate individual
education plans for identified students in the following areas:
1. Social and Behavior Skills:
- Appropriate behaviors with peers
- Appropriate behaviors with authority figures
- Appropriate behaviors in community and social situations
- Community rules
- Sharing, self control, self esteem
- Responsibility
2. Self Help Skills:
- Independent work skills
- Independent living skills
- Survival skills
- Pre-vocational training
3. Communications:
- Articulation: speech sound development
- Voice: vocal nodules, voice abuse, etc.
- Fluency: stuttering
- Language: use of language, understanding language, processing, social use of speech
4. Academics:
- Reading: Readiness/Oral Reading/Comprehension/Reading Skills
- Written Language: Fine Motor Skills/Oral Language Development/Written Expression
- Math: Readiness/Computation/Problem Solving/Application
- General Knowledge: Humanities/Science/Health/Social Studies
USD 266 is a member of the Sedgwick County Area Educational Services
Interlocal Cooperative. Member schools are: Burrton, Cheney, Clearwater, Conway Springs,
Goddard, Maize, Renwick, Sedgwick, and Valley Center. The cooperative employs personnel to
educate children in the areas of: speech, learning disability, educable mentally
handicapped, severely multiple handicapped, trainable mentally handicapped, hearing
impaired, visually impaired, personal and social adjustment, behavioral disordered,
physically impaired, as well as school psychologists to make proper evaluation of
students. In the areas of gifted education, personnel are employed by each individual
district. In addition there is a workstudy program, social workers, and instructional
materials center, and preschool available for children 3 to school age. Other services
available to students are contracted through educational services and paid for by the
cooperative. Students with special needs in grades K-12 in Maize Schools have access to
all of the above services.
COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
Focus:
Maize USD 266 counselors strive to help students with their personal, social,
educational, and vocational needs in order to assist them in becoming more productive,
responsible citizens in an ever changing world. The elementary counselors
serve the students' personal, social, educational, and vocational needs through
individual, group, and classroom guidance.
Basic Outcomes:
- Able to demonstrate problem solving skills
- Able to improve communication skills
- Able to demonstrate anger management
- Able to display refusal skills regarding alcohol/drug abuse and inappropriate touch
- Are able to improve interpersonal relationships
SCHOOL NURSE
Focus:
A comprehensive school health program is essential for the promotion,
protection, maintenance, and improvement of the health of the school population. The
purpose of school nursing is to enhance the educational process by the modification or
removal of health related barriers to learning and by promotion of an optimum level of
wellness among school aged children, youth, and school personnel. The goal for the
elementary nurse is health education for all students. This will be accomplished
throughout the school year by:
- classroom presentations to reinforce health curriculum.
- helping students learn more about their special needs or conditions when it is
appropriate.
- acting as a resource person for teachers and other school personnel.
TITLE I PROGRAM
Focus:
Teachers will strive to build confidence and foster a positive attitude toward
learning, while moving individuals from where they are performing academically to their
current grade level.
Basic Outcomes:
- 55% of the students will achieve a positive Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE) score
- Title I teachers will provide positive support to classroom teachers in remediating
students
- To foster a positive outlook towards reading, literature and written language
- To foster a positive outlook towards problem solving, computation and math concepts
