When is the library media center open?
The library media center is officially open Monday - Friday from 7:00 am until 3:30 pm. Occasionally, library staff will stay later, you may work in the library as long as a staff member is present. Changes in the normal hours will be posted at the library media center entrance.
When can I use the library media center?
You are welcome to use the library media center
before school and after school without a pass. During class times, you must have
your agenda book pass signed by your teacher. Your agenda book must be signed with
date, time and teacher's name clearly marked. Be sure to sign in and show your pass
to the staff at the front desk.
Use of the library media center
during encore requires a library stamp from the library staff. You must bring your
agenda book to the library for a stamp. Only thirty students are permitted to use
the library media center during encore time.
You may also use the library media
center when your teacher has signed for a time for class research.
When
can I get an encore stamp?
The best time to get a stamp to come to the library media center during encore is before first hour. The library is limited to thirty students during encore time and the space fills up quickly. If you do not need to use library materials or computers please do not ask to come to the library media center at this time.
How can I check out a book from the library media center?
Your Agenda book with intact barcode is your library media center card. To check out materials, your agenda book and books are scanned at the circulation desk. If your barcode will not scan or scans improperly, you will be required to get a replacement before you can check out materials. You are discouraged from checking out materials for others. You are ultimately responsible for anything checked out on your card.
What
if I lose my Agenda book?
You must have a replacement Agenda book. You will be charged a replacement fee. You will need to go to the counselor's office for a new Agenda book. Remember, your agenda book is also required for passes, and for encore.
How
long can I keep a book out?
Most books can be checked out for 3 weeks. Some reference books are available for overnight checkout only. You may renew non reference books unless someone else has requested it.
How many books can I check out?
There is no limit to the number of books that may be checked out. Remember, however, you are responsible of all books checked out on your card.
What if a book I want is already checked out?
If a book you want is checked out by someone else, you can place it on hold. You will be sent a notice when it is available to check out.
What if I can't
find a book on the shelf?
It is annoying when the on-line
catalog says a book is in but when you go to the shelf the book is not in its place. Here
are some helpful ideas for locating a book that appears to be missing.
The first thing to do is to scan the
shelf near where the book should be. Other students sometimes take books off the shelves
and put them back out of call number sequence. Also check the book carts in the library to
see if a book is waiting to be shelved. If you still can't find the book, double check the
computer to make sure you copied the call number correctly, and to make sure you didn't
misread the "out" message.
The next step is to report the
missing book at the circulation desk. We can do a lot to help you get the book you need.
If a book is actually checked out, you can place it on hold. When the book comes back, you
will be notified and the book will be held for you at the circulation desk.
Sometimes we can find a reason why a
particular book is not on the shelf. Very new books may be on a "new
books" shelf. Damaged books may be at the bindery or getting repaired. If a
book was recently returned, it may be in limbo between check-in and shelving. At the
circulation desk, the staff can look at processing and return dates in the computer to
help track the location of a book. Sometimes the book is just missing. After you
report a missing book, the library staff will search for it and you will be notified if it
shows up. Most of the books reported missing show up again within a week, but some are
really gone. It is helpful when you report missing books because it helps us know we need
to order a replacement copy.
What are the rules in the library media center?
The library media center is a pretty quiet place. Not silent -- but pretty quiet; people are expected to work with a minimum of conversation. Only a few rules have been necessary to keep the library media center a comfortable and businesslike place to work:
Only authorized agenda book passes will be accepted.
Be quiet. If you have called attention to yourself, you blew it...
No Food, drink, candy or gum.
Of course, school-wide-rules apply wherever you are.
Why
is there a gate at the exit?
The security gate alarm will go off if a book leaves the library without being properly checked out. Please remember to check out your materials before leaving the library media center. Please be aware that books from the public and university libraries will set the alarm off. If you have a book from another library, give it to one of the library staff and we will carry it around for you. Also, be aware that rented video tapes will set the alarm off too, so ask a staff member to carry it around as well.
A coin operated copier is located in the library media center for student use. Copies are 10 cents each. Change for the copier is available at the circulation desk.
What about overdue, lost or damaged library books?
The Library Media Center does not charge fines for
overdue materials. But that does not mean you can keep the material lost in your
locker. You are responsible for returning your materials on time or renewing
them. If materials become overdue, you will receive a courtesy overdue notice.
If you do not return or renew the material with one week of the original due date you will
receive notice of a 15 (fifteen) minute detention to be served in the library media
center.
When you borrow, you must return. And for
those few occasions when you simply can't -- perhaps it's lost, or eaten by your dog, or
left on the airplane -- here is how to clear up your library media center record.
Book
Replace it with another copy -- try used book stores
or flea markets, and remember replacements must
be in good shape, with no mildew, torn pages, etc.
Or pay the library media center the cost to buy a new
copy.
Magazine Replace it with a complete copy (of the same
issue
that you borrowed) -- try friends and relatives,
doctor's offices, etc.
Or pay the library media center a $5.00 replacement
charge.
Damaged
Books
If you check out a book and it is returned
damaged
(pages torn, missing, water damage, etc.) you will be
charged a fee to repair the material. If it is beyond
repair, you must pay for the replacement cost of the
book.
What if I don't remember taking the book out in the first
place?
Come and talk to the library media staff about it. Nothing is checked out unless we scan your Agenda book barcode and books into the computer. The computer keeps track of the date and time everything is checked out to jog your memory. And if a mistake has been made, it's important to straighten things out as soon as possible. As you are responsible for everything checked out on your card, we do not encourage you to check anything out for anyone other than yourself.
What if I'm
positive I returned it already?
If you receive a courtesy notice and believe you have returned the books come in and talk to the library media staff. We will double check the shelves for the material. If you receive an after school detention notice we have double checked the shelves and have not found the materials. Don't just blow off the notice, come in and talk to us. Perhaps we can figure out what went wrong.
Why do I have to replace it at all?
Because it's the right thing to do. And because we all have an obligation to preserve the resources in the school.
How should I make out the check?
Make the check out to Maize High School. For your own records, you may want to put the title of the lost book on the memo line.
Why can't I pay whatever the book cost when the library media
center bought it?
Let's say you lost the library media center's hardback copy of Gone With the Wind, which we bought in the early 1970's for $6.95. Since Macmillan sells that book today for $21.95, we wouldn't be able to get another one if you only made up the original cost.
What if
I find the book later?
If you paid for it, you'll get a full refund unless it has been damaged.
The money collected for lost books is used to replace those titles with new editions or if the title is out of print, a title on the same subject. If we can't find a good replacement, the money goes for other library media center materials.
What if I just don't have the money to pay my library fines?
Come and talk to the library media specialist. You may be able to pay your debt off by working in the library before or after school.
