Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is an after school activity that requires students to either build something, or study and test on a certain area.

Building Events

  • Battery Buggy-Teams will design and build a battery powered vehicle to traverse a course.
  • Bottle Rocket-Participants will design, construct and test one or two rockets made from a 2-liter plastic pop bottle which will remain aloft for a maximum period of time.
  • Bridge Building-Given certain parameters of length, width, height, and materials, each team is to design, build and test the lightest bridge to carry a maximum standard load.
  • Experimental Design-Given a set of unknown objects, teams will design and conduct an experiment.
  • Flight (The "Wright" Stuff)-Students will design and build a propeller propelled aerodynamic device for greatest time aloft.
  • Mission Possible-Participants will design and build a Rube Goldberg like device which demonstrates a series of energy transfers to accomplish a specific task.
  • Mystery Architecture-Teams will design and construct a specified structure on-site.
  • Trajectory-Students will design, construct, calibrate and shoot a device capable of launching a ball into a target area of sand.
  • Water Strider-Students will design and build a device, using only the materials specified, that will travel the length of a water filled trough, propelled solely by the carbon-dioxide produced from the chemical reaction between sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid.
  • Write It Do It-A technical writing exercise where students prepare a written description of a contraption and other students in a separate room will attempt to recreate the contraption using only the written description.

Academic Events

  • Amphibians and Reptiles-Students Research Amphibians and Reptiles, and must be able to identify pictures, specimens, and calls.
  • Science Crime Busters-Students will correctly identify liquids, solids, and other materials in a crime scenario.
  • Dynamic Earth-Teams will work at stations that display a variety of earth science materials and related earth science questions.
  • Reach for the Stars-Students research astronomy in order to be able to identify constellations and answer astronomy problems.
  • Experimental Design-Given a set of unknown objects, teams will design and conduct an experiment.
  • Road Scholar-Requires the accurate interpretation of various map features using a variety of road and topographic maps.
  • Rocks and Minerals-Students will identify, describe, and classify rock specimens.
  • Nature Quest-Combines a scavenger hunt, cross country compass race, and nature study.
  • Physical Science Lab-Students will complete activities and answer questions about
  • Water Quality-Students demonstrate appreciation and understanding of aquatic ecology, water resource management, water treatment processes, and aquatic chemical processes.
  • Bio-Process Lab-Students answer a series of questions designed to test biological lab skills such as measurement, observation, and interpretation.
