Math

(required--year)

Geometry--pre-requisite Algebra and teacher approval

Focus: The course will focus on the development of logical thinking skills, the application of formulas involving measurement, and the development of an appreciation of the applications ofgeometry on the real world.

Geometry is the study of the characteristics of geometric figures.

Algebra--teacher approval

Focus: The focus for Algebra is on the proper use of signed numbers, integral exponents, graphs, linear equations, systems of equations, and perimenter, area and volume of geometric figures.

Algebra introduces the use of variables within the basic operations of mathematics. Polynomials and factoring are introduced as part of the process to solve equations. The solving and graphing of linear equations, quadratic equations, and inequalities are emphasized. There is an introduction of basic trigonometry which will be built upon in the more advanced Algebra classes. Problem solving is also connected and emphasized in all areas of the subject matter.

A. Evaluate arithmetic and algebraic expressions.
B. Solve and graph systems of equations and inequalities.
C. Demonstrate an understanding of basic number theory and translate real world problems into algebraic and statistical representations.
D. Math problem solving performances.

Pre-Algebra--teacher approval

Focus: The focus for Pre-Algebra for grades 7 and 8 is on basic concepts of introductory level abstract algebra.

The 8th grade pre-algebra class consists of students who performed well in a 7th grade regular math class and were recommended by their teacher. There is a review of basic properties and operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and percentages. Geometry is integrated into algebra topics. The main emphasis is on problem solving and writing and solving equations with one or two variables. Inequalities, graphing, and statistics are also covered.

A. Automate the use of fractions, mixed numbers and decimals in all operations.
B. Solve problems using ratios and percents and simple word problems.
C. Use integers, exponents and integral roots in math operations.
D. Graph on a number line and on the x-y plane.
E. Solve linear equations and equalities.
F. Demonstrate an understanding of simple geometric concepts.
G. Solve using the 4-step problem solving process.

Math Improvement 8--Math Improvement 8 is available for the student having difficulty in math. Scores from the Metropolitan Achievement Test and the Stanford Diagnostic Mathematics Test determine the student's eligibility for this improvement class. This class provides individualized instruction to help the student gain proficiency in the basic skills for math.

IR Math 8--IEP required--This class is designed for students based on their individualized educational plan while following 8th grade curriculum requirements as much as possible.
