Science 8th

(required--year)

Science 8th -- Focus: The student will explore seven categories identified by the national science standards and will develop process skills applicable to life experiences through six themes identified by Kansas State Science Standards.

A. Describe the dynamics of Earth's waters, explain the concept of pressure as it applies to the depth of the ocean and explain how density of water is affected by temperature and the number of particles.
B. Explain the relationships among forces, work, power and efficiency and their application to machines. Distinguish between kinetic and potential energy and be able to explain how energy conversions occur. Demonstrate energy in work and simple machines.
C. Use equipment to measure voltage, current, resistance, power and be able to calculate cost in electrical systems. Describe magnetism in terms of poles, forces and fields. Identify the basic parts of a circuit and a parallel circuit.
D. Classify matter using properties, states and composition down tot he atomic and molecular level.
E. Explain how properties of waves affect matter. Identify characteristics of sound including pitch, wavelength or frequency, loudness, duration and quality.
F. Describe the electromagnetic spectrum particularly the visible portion and its properties of reflection, refraction and diffraction.
G. Performances: Apply scientific process skills (define a problem, write a hypothesis, design and conduct an experiment, gather data, interpret and construct charts and graphs, evaluate data and draw conclusions). Use these skills to conduct an independent investigation and complete a full laboratory report.
