Do I have to own a computer to take an online course?
It is not required, but it is highly recommended. It will
be possible for students to work on school computers. Access
to a computer in public library can provide additional study time.
What type of student should take an online Internet-based
course?
Online courses appeal to a wide range of students: those who are
college-bound and need advanced coursework; those who are homebound;
those who are unable to attend school during traditional times;
those who would like to improve their skills in specific subject
areas; gifted or advanced students needing expanded offerings; or
those who need summer credit hours.
How do students register for a Maize USD 266 online course?
Registration information and a course description catalog are
available at the Maize High School counselor link on the website,
www.usd266.com.
Who creates and teaches the courses?
All Maize Online courses are developed and taught by certified
Maize High School teachers. They receive special training and
education to prepare them for teaching online.
What is the cost of taking a Maize Online course?
The cost is $100 for .5 credit and $200 for 1.0 credit.
Payment may be made in the form of a money order, cashier's check or
personal check made payable to Maize USD 266.
What are the technical requirements for an online course?
A computer, an Internet Service Provider (ISP), a telephone line to
connect to your ISP or high speed internet access connection, a web
browser (Internet Explorer 5.0 is recommended), an email address, a
word processing program and an anti-virus program.
What technical skills are required?
Students need basic computer skills such as "copy and paste",
"create and save" a file, familiarity with the word processing
program Microsoft Word and keyboarding skills. Students are
also expected to know the procedures for sending/receiving email,
including attaching files.
Is there a registration refund for students who do not complete the
course?
No refunds are given for non-completion of coursework.
How many hours a week should a student work on the course?
At a minimum students are required to login and perform work in
their online education courses at least 4-5 times a week, dispersed
throughout the week, for approximately 5-7 hours a week for a .5
credit course, depending on the length of course.
