Fourth Grade
With school and family working together, fourth grade students will develop into
lifelong perceptive, articulate, cooperative, ethical communicators and problem solvers
who will recognize and respect the diversity of cultures.
MATH
Focus:
Students leaving fourth grade will be mathematically literate problem solvers through
the use of computational methods and basic skills.
Basic Outcomes:
- Addition and Subtraction with renaming
- Place Value and Numeration with estimating and rounding, reading and understanding
large numbers, and comparing and ordering numbers
- Multiplication and Division - learning basic facts and understanding of (0-12) and
understand the process of long division and multiplication
- Measurement - time and standard units and metric units
- Problem Solving - understanding process and strategies and the application of
- Money - decimals, identify bills and coins
- Algebraic Concepts - finding missing numbers using symbols and use of a number line to identify numbers
- Use of technology with calculators and computers
- Math performance
SCIENCE
Focus:
Fourth grade students will use analysis and process skills as critical thinkers and
problem solvers.
Basic Outcomes:
- Develop an understanding of the Earth as a system and the force of gravity
- Develop an understanding of the solar system and the planets
- Develop an understanding of the water cycle and the effects water has on land forms and the effects on living organisms
- Develop an understanding of the Earths resources, conservation and recycling
- Performance: Use the scientific method process of inquiry
COMMUNICATIONS
Focus:
Students will demonstrate comprehension of communication skills through oral and
written language.
Basic Outcomes:
- Vocabulary development in spelling, phonics, structural analysis and daily
application
- Oral language development using verbal communication
- Written language development in expression of ideas, mechanics, sentence structure, grammar, and writing for a purpose
- Reading comprehension development in following directions, literal reading and critical reading, and in responding to literature
- Reference skills development
SOCIAL STUDIES
Focus:
Students will develop an appreciation and understanding of our community, state,
country and world from our past, present and into our future.
Basic Outcomes:
- Develop a vocabulary and understanding of our community, state, country and world from our past, present, and into our future
- Civics/Government: Develop a working knowledge of government systems of the United States
- Economics: Develop an understanding of major economic concepts, issues, and systems of the United States
- Geography: Regions of the U.S., use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to locate and use information about people, places and environment; recognizes and locates all 50 states; understands ecosystems, landforms, water bodies, and natural resources of the earth
- U.S. and World History: Develop the knowledge and understanding of significant individuals, groups, ideas, eras, and development in the history of the United States
- Performance Assessment: People from past and present, famous and obscure, who have influenced your life and the lives of others
FINE/PRACTICAL ARTS
The fine/practical arts (physical education/health, music, art, technology) area will
give students exposure to programs which focus on developing practical lifetime skills.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Focus:
The purpose of elementary physical education is to develop and maintain the
knowledge, skills and concepts inherent to the total development of a child, physically,
psychologically, socially, emotionally and intellectually, which will increase levels of
enjoyment for self confidence and successful living.
Basic Outcomes:
Participation in a quality physical education program would
result in students being able to develop skills so they are able to do the following:
- demonstrate competency in a variety of basic and advanced movement forms (motor skills).
- apply movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills (learning concepts).
- understand the cause and effect associated with participation in physical education (lifetime benefits).
- demonstrate the knowledge to monitor and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness (is physically fit).
- demonstrate the social and personal responsibility associated with participation in physical activity (personal and social skills).
HEALTH
Focus:
The focus in health is for students to demonstrate awareness of the importance
of nutrition, hygiene, exercise and safety.
Basic Outcomes:
- Melody (i.e. Play simple melody pattern)
- Rhythm (i.e. Conduct music in 4/4 meter)
- Harmony (i.e. Sing 2-part songs)
- Form (i.e. Identify a theme and variations)
- Timbre (Tone Color) (i.e. Identify instrument families by sight and sound)
- Expression/Creativity (i.e. Sing with expression using proper use of dynamics, tempo, style)
- Style/Culture (i.e. Studies the Nutcracker Ballet)
- Tonal Production (i.e. Sing with relaxed, natural tone using correct posture and breathing)
- Technique (i.e. Play recorder with a pleasing tone)
ART
Focus:
The focus in art is the appreciation and expression of self and others to
enhance the quality of life.
Basic Outcomes:
- Be able to use a variety of art materials (clay, paint, sponges to create art)
- Be able to complete individually and/or in groups finished artistic work
- Be able to pre-plan and identify the idea or motivation behind the work
- Demonstrate safe use of art tools and materials
- Demonstrate understanding of elements and principles of design
- Know about various artists and be able to identify examples of their work
- Become familiar with art made by other cultures
TECHNOLOGY
Focus:
Students will have the ability to access and utilize technology skills as tools
to foster critical thinking in all subjects in all grades K-12.
Basic Outcomes:
- Recognize the process of a computer and how it works
- Describe how computers affect our lives
- Through the use of technology and cooperative learning strategies, the student will participate in a group activity integrated within their curriculum
- Develop keyboarding skills to 20 wpm
- Demonstrate uses of the computer as a communication tool
SUPPORT SERVICES
The support staff/programs incorporate more dimensions and options to student life in
order to better serve and assist the student.
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
Focus:
The focus of the library media center is to create an appreciation of literature
and to prepare students to access, utilize, analyze, and develop information within the
curriculum disciplines.
Basic Outcomes:
- Know library procedures and appropriate behavior
- Be able to locate and use general subject information resources
- Be able to acquire, analyze, and utilize information
- Be able to organize and record information
- Be able to produce, create and communicate information effectively
- Recognize literature as an essential base of cultural and practical knowledge
COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
Focus:
Maize USD 266 counselors strive to help students with their personal, social,
educational, and vocational needs in order to assist them in becoming more productive,
responsible citizens in an ever changing world. The elementary counselors
serve the students' personal, social, educational, and vocational needs through
individual, group, and classroom guidance.
Basic Outcomes:
- Able to demonstrate problem solving skills
- Able to improve communication skills
- Able to demonstrate anger management
- Able to display refusal skills regarding alcohol/drug abuse and inappropriate touch
- Able to improve interpersonal relationships
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Focus:
The aim of the Maize Special Education Program is to meet individual needs of
students and to foster confident, independent, successful, life long learners. K-5 Basic
Elements - to develop and implement developmentally appropriate individual education plans
for identified students in the following areas:
1. Social and Behavior Skills:
- Appropriate behaviors with peers
- Appropriate behaviors with authority figures
- Appropriate behaviors in community and social situations
- Community rules
- Sharing, self control, self esteem
- Responsibility
2. Self Help Skills:
- Independent work skills
- Independent living skills
- Survival skills
- Pre-vocational training
3. Communications:
- Articulation: speech sound development
- Voice: vocal nodules, voice abuse, etc.

USD 266 is a member of the Sedgwick County Area Educational Services Interlocal
Cooperative. Member schools are: Burrton, Cheney, Clearwater, Conway Springs, Goddard,
Maize, Renwick, Sedgwick, and Valley Center. The cooperative employs personnel to educate
children in the areas of: speech, learning disability, educable mentally handicapped,
severely multiple handicapped, trainable mentally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually
impaired, personal and social adjustment, behavioral disordered, physically impaired, as
well as school psychologists to make proper evaluation of students. In the areas of gifted
education, personnel are employed by each individual district. In addition there is a
workstudy program, social workers, and instructional materials center, and preschool
available for children 3 to school age. Other services available to students are
contracted through educational services and paid for by the cooperative. Students with
special needs in grades K-12 in Maize Schools have access to all of the above services.
SCHOOL NURSE
Focus:
A comprehensive school health program is essential for the promotion,
protection, maintenance, and improvement of the health of the school population. The
purpose of school nursing is to enhance the educational process by the modification or
removal of health related barriers to learning and by promotion of an optimum level of
wellness among school aged children, youth, and school personnel. The goal for the
elementary nurse is health education for all students. This will be accomplished
throughout the school year by:
- classroom presentations to reinforce health curriculum.
- helping students learn more about their special needs or conditions when it is appropriate.
- acting as a resource person for teachers and other school personnel.
TITLE I PROGRAM
Focus:
Teachers will strive to build confidence and foster a positive attitude toward
learning, while moving individuals from where they are performing academically to their
current grade level.
Basic Outcomes:
- 55% of the students will achieve a positive Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE) score
- Title I teachers will provide positive support to classroom teachers in remediating students
- To foster a positive outlook towards reading, literature, and written language
- To foster a positive outlook towards problem solving, computation, and math concepts
