Scholastic Reading Counts
Pray-Woodman Elementary School believes that
developing a healthy relationship with the community will in turn help make students good
future citizens. Whereas the community and the school are equal partners in developing
these citizens, it is important to provide opportunities for the community to participate
in the school and the school to participate in the community. Following are examples of
these opportunities:
Pray-Woodman Assets and Life Skills
(PALS) - Pray-Woodman Elementary focuses on six basic life skills throughout the
school year, including Responsibility, Respect, Honesty, Caring, Self-Control
and Good Citizenship. All classes conduct at least bi-weekly class
meetings with consistent language. Students are focused weekly on an
individual life skill. We hold quarterly PALS assemblies to invite a
presenter, discuss and recognize individual students and celebrate our
successes.
Caring Hearts - Students and staff are asked to
bring in both food and gift donations during the holidays to assist local families in
need.
Rain Forest Adoption - The Earth Foundation,
sponsored through The Nature Conservancy, is a legitimate environmental organization
working directly to finance conservation efforts in threatened rainforest ecosystems in
Latin America and the Caribbean. The PWS Media Center has a program each spring that
focuses on a study of the Earth's environment. With the student body and staff's support,
by purchasing T-shirts, we have adopted over 325 acres of rainforest over the last seven
years!
Picture Person Program - This unique program
enlists community and parent volunteers to make brief presentations to classrooms covering
a particular artist and his/her art works. Training is provided with the program's goal to
enlighten and introduce students to various types of art and to begin to develop the
student's sense of art appreciation.
KSNW Hotline - KSNW television, as a community
service project, is sponsoring at no cost to the schools, a hotline phone number that
designated person (s) may use to inform district patrons of school activities, field
trips, classroom activities, lunch menus, academic achievers, counselors' advice and even
a poll on various topics at PWS.
Kids Voting - Various community task force
committees involved with Kids Voting Kansas/USA and the voting process work with
classrooms promoting the principles of democracy and the voting process.
Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) - Our school is
fortunate to have an active PTO. The group works with the school and staff to enhance the
quality of education for all children. By supporting PTO sponsored projects such as
classroom parties, sweatshirt sales, Joyland Fun Night, skating parties, the
parent/teacher organization is turn uses proceeds to purchase equipment, books, games,
dies cuts, etc. for our school.
Project Guatemala - When Hurricane Mitch hit the
coast of Guatemala, 400 familes were moved to the southwester portion of the country into a village called Palin.
A tin structure was put up on a dirt clearning to serve as a school. Pray-Woodman has adopted this school and
sends much-needed school supplies to help in its supoport. We have various fund raisings such as Grab A Hat For
Guatemala in which students pay 25 cents to wear a hat.
