Parents as Teachers
What is Parents as Teachers?
Parents as Teachers is a free,
voluntary program provided by the Kansas State Department of Education and the
Maize School District to all families, regardless of income, who have a child
or children under the age of 36 months. Parents as Teachers provides
personal home visits, playgroups, group meetings, developmental screenings,
story times, newsletters and much more.
Personal Visits
The personal visit is the heart
of the Parents as Teachers program. During the personal visit, a
certified parent educator provides parents with current, neuroscience
research-based child development information and activity ideas for parents to
use in their own home, in their own way. Children enjoy the many fun
activities that the parent educator demonstrates in the child's familiar,
comfortable surroundings. A child grows and changes more during the
first three years of life than at any other time. Parents with good
information make good choices. Home....where the love of learning
begins.
Playgroups and Other Fun
Events
Maize Parents as Teacher's
theme-based playgroups provide parents and their young children an opportunity
to have a lot of fun together, develop new skills, interact with other
children of similar ages and participate in sorts of fun activities.
Parents also enjoy visiting with other parents who have young children.
Playgroups are offered several times each month at various times. There
are daytime and evening ones, so all parents can participate.

Developing Screenings
Parents as Teachers offers
periodic screenings of overall development, language, motor skills, social and
cognitive development, hearing and vision. Screenings provide parents
with insight regarding their child's strengths, and point out areas that may
need to be encouraged prior to the beginning of school. Parent educators
assist parents in developing fun and easy-to-follow plans to help their child
grow and learn in his or her own environment... home.

Fun for All ... and More
Maize Parents as Teachers hosts
many special events including: holiday parties; workshops for parents;
picnics; get-togethers for moms, dads and families; and much more. In
addition, the program provides connections to many community resources;
assists with school readiness; provides developmental information based on
neurological research; and offers opportunities for interactions with adults
and participation in a family-centered, positive organization. An
informative and fun newsletter is published every other month, and is provided
on request.
