School board policy requires students be in compliance with state law regarding immunizations. Students are required to provide certification of current immunizations. A student may be prevented from attending school if they do not have current immunizations.

Students who are ill should never be sent to school.

Students with a temperature at or above 100 degrees will be sent home.  A student must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school. School health rooms are set up to give first aid to the sick and injured, give necessary medication, and care for students with chronic health problems. Students who become ill at school need to be picked up quickly to prevent the  spread of illness in the school.

Each school has a school nurse assigned to the health room in each building. Nurses in each building conduct annual screens for vision and hearing impairments, and they coordinate the dental screenings in each school.  Dental screens are conducted under the guidance of a licensed dentist.  

 Any student noted by a physician, or the school nurse, or local health officer as having a communicable disease may be excluded from school for the duration of the illness. The student will be readmitted to regular classes upon termination of the illness, as authorized by the student’s physician, the local health officer, or after the expiration of any period of isolation or quarantine.

The following communicable diseases MUST be reported to the Sedgwick County Health Department. Students will be excluded from school immediately until health department disease investigators provide additional directions  regarding exclusions, readmission, contact exposure and preventative measures:

• Measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis, shigella, salmonella, pertussis (whooping cough), Shiga toxin producing E. coli. 

The following communicable diseases Must be reported to the Sedgwick County Health Department. Disease investigators will provide directions regarding exclusion, contact exposure, and preventative measures:

• Chicken Pox, Hepatitis A, and Tuberculosis

The following diseases are not reportable to the health department. Contact the nurse in your building to find out if an order is needed for your student to return to school:

• Impetigo: May attend school once prescribed therapy is started
• Pinkeye (bacterial conjunctivitis): May attend school once prescribed therapy is started
• Ringworm of the skin and scalp: May attend school if receiving treatment
• Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA): Unless directed by a physician, should not be excluded.  The wound should be covered.
• Streptococcal disease, including strep throat: May attend school 24 hours following initiation of antibiotic therapy.  An infected person should remain in isolation for 10 days if untreated.
• Pediculosis (head lice): May attend school once treatment with an insecticidal drug is initiated. Nits may persist after treatment, but successful treatment should kill crawling lice. 
• Scabies: May attend school once prescribed therapy is started
• Bed bugs: Will be addressed by school.  

A child may be excluded for an additional period of time if the principal or other school district administrator(s) feel it is necessary for the child’s protection or for the protection of the other children. If a child is excluded because of a suspected communicable disease, certification by a licensed physician is required for readmittance. In the event of an outbreak of any of these or other communicable diseases, the health officer may issue restrictive requirements as needed.

Kansas law requires that all students up to the age of 9 years old must have on file a completed health assessment (physical) form. The assessment may be completed by a licensed physician (MD, DO), or a certified physician’s assistant (PA-C).  Failure to comply with this law will result in the student being excluded from school until compliance is achieved.

As an alternative to the health assessment required, a student shall present:

• A written statement signed by one parent or guardian with the child is an adherent of a religious denomination whose religious teachings are opposed to such assessment; or,
• A written statement by one parent or guardian that such assessment will be scheduled and completed within 90 days after admission to school.

Students in grades 7-12 who participate in Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) athletics, spirit or spirit competition groups must have a physical completed each year the student participate in the activity. 

The physical may be completed by a licensed physician (MD, DO, DC), a certified physician’s assistant (PA-C), or an advance practice registered nurse (APRN).
