Mental Health Services

USD 266 was one of the first school districts in Kansas to participate in the Mental Health Intervention Team program.
The 2018 Kansas Legislature provided funding for school districts across Kansas to offer programs and therapy to address mental health needs for students and families. The purpose of the MHIT program is to eliminate barriers for students and families in need of clinical therapy and provide access to local community health centers.

Today, USD 266 employs six Behavioral Liaisons who accept and manage referrals for mental health services from a variety of sources. Behavioral Liaisons focus their work on helping families navigate the complexities of acquiring mental health services. Our Behavioral Liaisons are assigned to Maize High School, Maize South High School, Complete High School of Maize, Maize Middle School, Maize South Middle School, Maize Intermediate School, and Maize South Intermediate School.

Our MHIT team partners with COMCARE of Sedgwick County for therapeutic services. COMCARE provides licensed therapists who are embedded in our schools. By having the therapists in the schools, students are less likely to miss significant parts of the school day, improving their attendance, and helping them enhance the educational opportunity.

In addition to the six Behavioral Liaisons and COMCARE therapists, USD 266 employs a therapist at the intermediate school level, and one at the high school level. In 2024, we added a substance abuse therapist for high schools.
