Child Find: Eligibility and Screening

The Maize Special Education Cooperative is committed to providing an education that appropriately meets the needs of each student. The Coop engages in age-appropriate Child Find activities that locate, evaluate, and identify students who are in need of special education services. Child Find is for young children ages birth through age 5 and is a screening. It is referred to as an educational evaluation for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Child Find usually begins with general education interventions.

Special Education Referrals for children ages 5 to 21

Students aged 5 to 21, including those who are highly mobile, migrant, and/or homeless, may be referred for special education evaluation by school personnel when a disability is suspected. Parents are notified and play an integral part in the process. Parents also may initiate a referral for a special education evaluation. The need for special education and related services is determined in consultation with parents at each building site. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s building personnel with concerns about their child’s progress.

Further information about referrals for special education services is available by contacting the principal at your child’s school or by contacting the special education department at specialeducation@usd266.com or by calling 350-2088.

Maize Special Education Cooperative Advisory Council

The Maize Special Education Cooperative Advisory Council was established in January 2022. Stakeholder groups represented on the council from both the Maize (USD 266) and Renwick (USD 267) school districts include parents, community partners, and school district employees.

The mission of the Maize Special Education Cooperative Advisory Council is to solicit input, support, provide guidance, advocate, and empower a collaborative partnership in order to strengthen the bonds among the member districts and community stakeholders (parents, students, staff, community partners) to ensure high quality educational opportunities for students with exceptionalities and their families. Below are the core beliefs of the Maize Special Education Cooperative Advisory Council:

  • All students can learn, belong, and are deserving of a quality education.
  • All students deserve an inclusive educational environment in which to learn and grow both academically and socially.
  • Differences and diversity are respected.
  • All programs should be accessible and effective in improving outcomes for all students.
  • All staff should receive the training and resources they need to perform their jobs.
  • Communication and advocacy among stakeholders (parents, staff, districts, Boards of Education, community partners, policy makers) are essential in facilitating and bringing about change.

The Special Education Advisory Council meets four times throughout the school year at the Maize Educational Support Center. For the 2024-2025 school year, council meetings will be held on:
