School board moves bond proposal forward to strengthen school safety, student opportunities

On June 8, 2026, the Maize Board of Education voted 7-0 to approve a proposed school bond plan, marking an important next step for Maize USD 266’s future. School board members unanimously supported the plan, which would strengthen school safety and expand opportunities for all students.

The plan will go before the Kansas State Board of Education for consideration in the next stage of the school bond process. If approved on the state level, the plan would go before voters during a March 2, 2027 election.

A cornerstone of the plan is the expansion of secure school entrances, providing improved visibility and controlled access to create safer, more secure schools for our students, employees, and community.

The plan invests in students and the future of Maize USD 266 by expanding learning spaces, growing career and technical education opportunities, strengthening student support services, and creating spaces where students can participate and succeed.

The plan also reflects community feedback and responsible planning in support of the district’s Lead Forward strategic plan. The recommendation was shaped by more than 18 months of study and input from students, employees, parents, and community members. It represents the work of the district’s community-led Facilities Steering Committee and a thoughtful approach to meeting district needs without increasing the mill levy.

At Maize USD 266, we are working to raise graduation rates, strengthen post-graduation success, and boost reading and math proficiency. Midway through our five-year Lead Forward strategic plan, we continue to provide the support, opportunities, and learning experiences every student needs to succeed.

Timeline

  • October 2024: Maize Board of Education establishes a timeline for the development of a Long-Range Facility Plan aligned with the district’s Lead Forward strategic plan, which includes a focus area to Build for the Future
  • December 2024: Facilities Steering Committee, including employees, students, parents, and community members, kicks off with initial meeting to begin planning to address district facility needs for the next five to 10 years
  • January 2025 through October 2025: Facilities Steering Committee meets regularly to learn more about district needs and tour schools, including Maize High School, Maize Career Academy, Maize Intermediate School, Maize Early Childhood Center, Vermillion Elementary School, and Maize South High School
  • October 2025: Facilities Steering Committee meets twice to learn more about the district’s large planned projects on the Capital Outlay Plan and prioritize identified needs to narrow options for a final long-range plan
  • November 2025: Facilities Steering Committee meets to review financial update on the district’s long-term plans and cost estimates, also developing a plan to gather broader input from stakeholders
  • January 2026: Community input stage is launched, with district leaders meeting with each school and department and stakeholder groups, including the District Site Council and Superintendent Student Advisory Team
  • March and April 2026: Stakeholder input sessions continue and include three public sessions: March 24 at Vermillion Elementary School, April 8 at Maize High School, and April 15 at Maize South High School. The Facilities Steering Committee meets to finalize their plan, making adjustments based on feedback gathered, and prepare for a presentation to the Maize Board of Education.
  • May 2026: On Monday, May 11, members of the Maize Board of Education unanimously approved the Facilities Steering Committee’s recommended plan, moving Maize USD 266 forward in a bond project process.
  • June 2026: On June 8, 2026, the Maize Board of Education unanimously approved the proposed school bond plan, which would strengthen school safety and expand opportunities for all students.
