Student Device Expectations
Beginning with the 2026-27 year, a new Kansas law limits student use of personal electronic devices during the school day. This change will affect students across Maize USD 266 and throughout Kansas.
Under the new law, students will not be allowed to use personal devices while school is in session. This includes cell phones, smart glasses, personal laptops or tablets, smartwatches, wireless earbuds, wireless headphones, and other personal messaging devices. The requirements apply to any device that is not issued by the school. Administrators reserve the right to determine whether an item is considered a student personal electronic device. In general, this includes any electronic device with a screen/communication capabilities.
The law defines the “school day” as the full instructional day, from the start of school until dismissal. This includes class time, recess, lunch, and passing periods.
Limited exemptions are available for medically necessary devices included in a student’s plan.
We understand that this will be a significant change in routine for some students and families, particularly our high school students accustomed to communicating by cell phone during the school day. When personal electronic communication devices cannot be used, students will be provided reasonable access to the district’s phones in the school office or classrooms to contact a parent or person acting as a parent during the school day as needed.
Our schools will work with students and families to help everyone adjust to these new expectations. We appreciate your partnership as we implement these new state requirements and support students through this change.

- Student personal electronic devices not issued by the school must be powered off, securely stored, and not used during the school day.
- Students are responsible for keeping their personal electronic devices powered off and securely stored during the school day. Educators and staff members will not routinely collect and/or store student personal electronic devices at the beginning of the school day or class period.
- Students can contact a parent or guardian during the school day using a school phone or other school-provided communication device when needed.
- If a student uses a personal electronic device during the school day, educators will follow consequences outlined in our student handbook for the student’s grade level.
- Medical exceptions are available when included in a student’s IEP or 504 plan.
