Maize Board of Education approves updates to Together for Tomorrow (T4T) Reopening Guide

The Maize Board of Education met for a special meeting on Aug. 20 and unanimously approved an updated Together for Tomorrow (T4T) Reopening Guide with the following amendments. Gating Criteria

  • The new tool: New to the T4T is Gating Criteria, a decision-making tool that provides a set of metrics the Maize Board of Education and Maize USD 266 district officials will use to keep students, employees, and the OneMa1ze community safe (Pages 5 through 7). It will help guide the district on important decisions, including those related to learning models, high-risk activities, visitor access, and more. Metrics informing these decisions include student absenteeism rates in schools and COVID-19 community data points. Changes will not happen automatically unless dictated by a lack of staffing that forces a temporary closure or shut down, and any overall district pivoting between learning models otherwise would be approved first by the school board.
  • OneMa1ze COVID Advisory Team (OCAT): Professional members of the new advisory team will provide the district and school board with multi-perspective recommendations to offer the safest teaching and learning environment possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. The team members will use the most recent scientific data and research, along with their professional experience as it relates to their specific medical, health, and educational fields (Page 7).

Additional amendments

  • Daily student temperature checks at school: Students will have their temperatures checked upon entering school buildings for the first time each day (Page 28). The district has purchased infrared wall-mounted thermometers and will check the temperature of all students each morning as they arrive at school. In accordance with Maize Board of Education policy, students with temperatures at or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit will be sent home. This added step allows an additional checkpoint to protect the health and safety of students and employees.
  • Remote Flex Learning: The full-time remote learning option two, previously referred to as Remote Independence, has been renamed Remote Flex (Page 18). This change better reflects that students will continue to learn with the support of educators and not completely independently.


  • Flexibility: The superintendent will have the authority to make the necessary changes in transportation practices to best serve the needs and safety of students and staff members (Page 31).
  • Bus riders: Students who do not reside in the same home will sit no more than two riders per seat (Page 31).

Extracurricular activities

  • Remote learners: Students enrolled in the full-time remote learning model will be eligible to participate in extracurricular athletics. They will be required to complete and submit a daily health self-assessment before participating (Page 39).
  • High-risk activities: On Page 40, recommendations for high-risk activities were added.
