School board eliminates COVID mitigation, reverts to district communicable disease policy

Maize Board of Education members voted 6-1 Monday, May 9 to eliminate all COVID mitigation in place and revert to the district’s current communicable disease policy. COVID illness will now fall under the health care/illness portion of the Student Handbook. Please click here to access the document. Please see page 50, which includes the following: 

“Students who are ill should never be sent to school. Students with temperatures at or above 100 degrees will be sent home. They must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to class.” 

The Maize Board of Education Policy’s Article III, Section 29 addresses Communicable Diseases for employees on page 34.

If a student or employee is sick, the district’s expectation is that they stay home until they have recovered from their illness and can no longer transmit it to others. Students and staff members who test positive for COVID should not come to work and school. Please continue to be mindful of the contagious nature of the virus and help keep our schools safe and healthy. 

For safety purposes, school guests will continue to follow the district’s practices for visitors and volunteers. Parents will still be asked to coordinate volunteer work with their child’s teacher and to check in at the school’s front office.
