Maize South Middle School teacher wins Horizon Award
Congratulations to Maize South Middle School English Language Arts teacher Hannah Martin, who on Jan. 8 was surprised with a phone call from Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson. He shared with her with the news that she is one of only 32 teachers statewide to be named a 2018 winner of the Kansas Horizon Award.
The prestigious program honors excellence in teaching in Kansas elementary and secondary classrooms and recognizes exemplary first-year teachers.
Ms. Martin's mother and two sisters (pictured below) also surprised her by visiting Maize South Middle School with flowers to hear the phone call from Dr. Watson with her.
For Ms. Martin's application for the award, Maize South Middle School Principal Gillian Gaskill Macias wrote, "Both professionally and personally, I am in awe of Ms. Martin's positive outlook on life and with all obstacles she may encounter. When you interact with Ms. Martin in the hallway, in the classroom, or at the many middle school activities she attends to support her students, Ms. Martin always has a smile on her face and a friendly demeanor. Ms. Martin is a sincere, compassionate, and kind person when dealing with both students and adults."
Winners of the award in 2017 include Complete High School Maize teacher Michael Russell and Vermillion Elementary School teacher Alexis Schirmer.
