Vermillion Elementary School showcases new Girls Who Code club
Vermillion Elementary School’s new Girls Who Code club attended the May 13 Maize Board of Education meeting to share what they are learning under the leadership of parent volunteer Amanda Wadsworth, whose daughters attend the school and who is a software development manager.
She said research indicates that only 18 percent of computer science majors are women and only 25 percent of computing jobs are held by women.
Nationally, Girls Who Code aims to close the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) areas. Mrs. Wadsworth contacted Vermillion Principal Michael Dome about bringing a club to the school. Its 16 members meet after school and learn about various aspects of code. They demonstrated videos, quizzes, and games they built on a web-based coding platform.
The school also offers a Kids Who Code club for students.
