2019-20 District Student Handbook now available

During its regular monthly meeting May 13, the Maize Board of Education approved the 2019-20 District Student Handbook. The new document is available by clicking here.

The biggest addition to the handbook this year is the new laude system and changes for valedictorian and salutatorian requirements. The new laude system lines out for the Class of 2020 and beyond recognition for Summa Cum Laude (With Highest Honor), Magna Cum Laude (With High Honor), and Cum Laude (With Honor). Information about these programs is available on Pages 38 and 39.

The laude system recognizes the top 3 percent of the class with summa cum laude, the top 3 percent to 10 percent with magna cum laude, and anyone with a weighted grade point average of 4.0 or higher with cum laude.

The aim of this system is to encourage the exploration of courses, including fine arts electives, without students worrying about sacrificing academic recognition.

The change, proposed by high school principals, is one the district has researched. Dr. Chad Higgins, Superintendent of Schools, discussed it with the Superintendent Student Advisory Team. Generally, students are very supportive and like that it would recognize more people for achieving very highly academically.
